ACEN's energy transition mechanism: Profitably funding a low carbon strategy?

ACEN Corporation, a major listed renewables company in Indo-Pacific, issued in 2022 the first Energy Transition Mechanism (ETM) in the world. Seen as a pioneering transaction, ACEN was seen to accelerate its low carbon transition, fund its aggressive expansion into renewables, and secure its future power supply commitments under a supply short Philippine power market. ACEN achieved these objectives through a planned phaseout of its coal-fired power asset, re-investing its cash proceeds and capital in low carbon alternatives, and adhere to commercial and strategic criteria in evaluating their investments.
