Learning Objective
There are six issues that are worthy of attention:
1. Financial sustainability: Should an organization like the TPA rely mostly on donations? Or should it instead focus on new financing strategies (e.g., having a parallel activity where they sell products - e.g., books - or services) that would make it more independent? (By definition there is always some dependence on donors.)
2. Transparency: Should the organization disclose full information about its donors?
3. The role of the Board: What do Board members in an organization like this generally do? Moreover, what does "upgrading"/expanding Board members mean? What can be achieved? What issues might arise?
4. The right shape: What is the right size for an organization like this? What are the criteria for identifying the right size? Are they just financial?
5. Leveraging membership: How can an organization like the TPA better engage and leverage its stakeholders? What can it reasonably expect from them? What are the cons of such a strategy (e.g., more complexity, less flexibility, less control, risk that some peripheral part will make a mistake and the media will run with it, etc.)?
6. Managing succession: What should be done when the founder leaves the organization? How should the organization work on this? What kind of individual should replace him?
