Ethics in decision-making (Portuguese version)

Considering the ethical dimension in decision-making means making a moral judgment about the decision to be made. In making such a judgment, it may be appropriate to listen to people with relevant expertise, but the decision-maker must strive to make a good moral judgment, since moral conscience cannot be delegated. Responsible moral judgment involves deliberating on two fundamental elements of any decision, which must be considered together: the morality of the intention to achieve an end and the deliberate choice of means (an "object"). One must also consider the morally relevant aspects of each situation (concurrent circumstances) and the reasonably foreseeable consequences (consequential circumstances). In some cases, along with the main end to be achieved, there are associated effects or consequences that are bad or undesirable. Some prudential guidelines can help us to assess the morality of decisions that have a double effect, one good and the other bad.
