Ferrer: A socially committed pharmaceutical company
In the competitive pharmaceutical world, Ferrer, led by Sergi Ferrer-Salat stands out for its strong commitment to social impact. After inheriting the company at a young age, Ferrer-Salat decided to transform it profoundly and take on the challenge of prioritizing social benefit without compromising the company's financial viability. Under the leadership of CEO Mario Rovirosa, the company underwent profound changes, including restructuring and a shift of focus to innovation. Ferrer consolidated its operations, achieving revenues of 645 million of euros in 2022 and reinvesting 46.9% of its profits in social and environmental initiatives. In 2022, Ferrer became the first Spanish pharmaceutical laboratory to join the B Corp community. The company also embarked on a 'cultural journey' reflected in its Ferrer for Good philosophy, which aims to have a positive impact on society through three key pillars: people, planet and social justice. The case presents the current discussion about the social impact generated by Ferrer and the allocation of funds from its philanthropic foundations. Despite the company's commitment to social change, the case illustrates the financial challenges Ferrer faces and the need to better measure and structure donations to maximize their impact. The discussion shows how Ferrer is seeking to strike a balance between business growth and social responsibility.

Learning Objective
The purpose of the case is to explore the mission of systemic philanthropy and the role of purpose in generating social impact with empowerment. Studying Ferrer and the alignment between its board and management committee on philanthropy prompts reflection on the evolution of a pharmaceutical company into a socially engaged entity that has established foundations with social and environmental goals. Ferrer's foundations will be analyzed to understand the social challenges they aim to address. The case serves to open a discussion on how to measure the social impact generated by each foundation, as well as the criteria and priorities to be considered when determining the distribution of funds from Ferrer to Ferrer for Good initiatives. Concrete ways in which Ferrer has benefited from the creation of its foundations and its approach to systemic philanthropy will also be explored.
