Description

Caviro was the largest wine cooperative company in Italy. Since its inception, they not only produced wine, but also managed many of the by-products of the fruit, generating value until the end. Caviro had developed a unique circular economy model with almost complete recovery of supply chain waste. This comprehensive management of organic waste from harvesting and winemaking was a perfect complement to wine production. Not only in environmental and circular economy terms, but in generating income and benefits. Sustainability was becoming a driver and drive for the core business, what would be the next steps?

Learning Objective

The fundamental pedagogical objective is to understand the challenges and difficulties in the implementation process, within the strategy, from the aspect of sustainability, and its impact on the performance of the company. Specifically, it will delve into the challenges of the Circular Economy, social and economic sustainability, not only environmental sustainability, and the relationship with all the actors in the value chain, also with cooperative members and winegrowers. The discussion of the case will also allow the following secondary academic objectives to be achieved: • Understand the implications of one of the most relevant trends for the Senior Management of companies: Sustainability. • Anticipate the opportunities that the implementation of sustainability strategies offers for competitiveness and business transformation. • Understand how the sustainability strategy can be a key lever to generate more value and better focus on customers, improve operational efficiency and improve the recruitment and retention of talent. • Deepen the concept of circular economy, zero waste and positive impact. • Gain criteria on the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals in companies and how sustainability strategies can contribute to their achievement. • Discuss the economic impact of sustainability policies. Will it be a higher cost or a source of efficiency and productivity? Who should “foot the bill” for sustainability?
