The purpose of this paper is to present a definition of responsible tourism (RT) as a business and consumer practice that approaches tourist activity from a global perspective that is mindful of the environmental, social and economic challenges facing our planet. It is divided into five sections: the first section gives a general overview of the industry in terms of its changes, challenges and opportunities; the second section defines the concepts of "responsible tourism" and "sustainable tourism," and the basic criteria involved; section three discusses tourism's stakeholders; section four introduces the concepts of "social responsibility" and "sustainable tourism" and examines the key points of each dimension (social, cultural, economic and environmental); finally, the conclusion focuses on the importance of responsible management of the destination as the foundation for building a sustainable tourism ecosystem.
