Two years after opening the Royal Collections Gallery in the heart of Madrid, the management team at Patrimonio Nacional faces a new challenge: how to leverage the momentum generated by this emblematic new museum within the broader transformation of this centuries-old institution.
Patrimonio Nacional manages over 167,000 artworks and 1,800 historic buildings. As a public institution, it has a dual mission: to support the institutional and representative functions of the Spanish Crown, and to make available to the public the vast cultural heritage accumulated by the Spanish monarchs over the centuries. Among its collections stand out masterpieces by artists such as El Greco, Caravaggio, Goya, or Velázquez, as well as sculptures, tapestries, and historic furniture that have adorned royal palaces and monasteries throughout the centuries.
The Gallery project had been stalled for years, and became a strategic priority for the new management team upon their arrival in 2021. Its inauguration in 2023 marked a milestone for Patrimonio Nacional, realizing the vision of a modern museum, tasked with raising the awareness of an organization that was little known by the general public, while simultaneously modernizing it and bringing it closer to an ever-changing society.
