Description

Winnaz is the brand name of the first potato crisps ever made in Rwanda; they are manufactured by Hollanda Fairfoods Ltd. (HFF), a Rwandan-Dutch enterprise founded in 2014. In 2017, Winnaz is the leading brand in Rwanda, and its products are sold in 300 outlets across 3 countries: Rwanda, Uganda, and RD Congo. The case describes its starting point and the challenges its founders and managers are facing in 2017. It shows the opportunities and challenges for commercial food processing in Africa regarding input supply, route-to-market, and how the needed functions should be undertaken along the value chain. Although the young company has progressed reasonably well so far, many challenges still lay ahead in the path to HFF’s goal: becoming the most popular snack brand in East Africa.
