La Fageda 1982-2008: An Outrageous Initiative

La Fageda is a social initiative which employs the mentally disabled and mentally ill in the Garrotxa region (Girona), helping them integrate into society through production and marketing of top quality yogurt. The case study raises growth alternatives and their consequences. La Fageda and its leadership are epitomized in the person of Cristóbal Colón, its founder and chairman. What started as a work cooperative is now a complex structure consisting of a work and consumers' cooperative and two foundations (a grant-making foundation and an assistance foundation) where governance, management and other interests dovetail. The case study addresses the alternatives for ensuring the continuity of the social initiative, reflecting on the government and institutional structure.
