Companyia Cervesera del Montseny (Portuguese version)

This case study contains the interview that the authors conducted with the main partners of the brewery Companyia Cervesera del Montseny in June 2018. A decade after being set up, the company had managed to grow but with poor profitability and enormous debt, due to the investments that they had made in the previous few years. However, they had the feeling that they had reached a point where it was no longer possible to grow organically but, rather, that something else had to be done to increase sales and, ultimately, optimize the investments made, as well as resolve the idle capacity they had in the plant. Their proposal involved opening four bars specializing in craft beer.

Learning Objective

This case study is designed to be used in any course on general management, business analysis, decision-making or entrepreneurship. The main objective is to analyze an executive decision (whether to open four bars specializing in craft beer) as part of the diagnostic process, with the aim of discovering the real problem hiding behind this decision. This diagnostic process requires a thorough analysis of the business (from the perspective of finance, operations, strategy, etc.). Once the problem has been detected, alternatives for solving it should be suggested, taking into account the characteristics of the company, the context and other criteria the decision-makers may have. It is, therefore, a classic case of business analysis from the perspective of general management. What would you advise the company's partners?
