Basetis: Is it possible to operate without a CEO? (A and B) - Teaching note

Since 2016, Basetis had been operating in a way that was fully aligned with the Teal paradigm, characterized by principles such as self-management, the search for personal fulfillment and continuous evolution. Employees were involved in all decisions affecting their work and in the governance of the company, from organizing events to compensation policy, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and strategy design. The company's structure was therefore completely flat and decentralized. The Global Committee, a body very similar to an executive committee, consisted of 13 employees democratically elected each year, who in turn elected the CEO. In 2023, they asked themselves: "Should we be consistent and eliminate the CEO position (apart from the fact that, if it is legally required, we would we would appoint someone to formally occupy the position)"?

Learning Objective

To discuss the advantages and difficulties of self-management, a system in which employees participate in decision-making across all areas of the company: human resources, strategy, marketing, communications, etc., although not all employees participate in all areas, and their involvement is not in the manner of an assembly, but rather structured, informed and orderly. Self-management encourages personal responsibility and transparency. While the question raised in the case is whether a CEO is needed, it is intended to stimulate a broader discussion about the feasibility of systems that are much more participatory than traditional ones and involve a high level of employee engagement in company decisions.
