In late July 2010 Reiner Meinhold is in Beijing at an internal meeting of the group of which Kölner Bank is a subsidiary. Reiner is resources director at Kölner, the market leader in retail and SME banking in the Rhineland. Following a crisis brought on by currency and commodity exposures, Kölner Bank has been taken over by Deutsche Handelsbank (DHB) and has completely reformulated its business plan. Now it is profitable and is growing in the gaps left by DHB.
Reiner's boss has just been transferred to group headquarters and wants to take Reiner with him. However, difficulties emerge with the management of Kölner Bank.
